Information for Patients and Physicians
Solid tumors encompass a range of cancer types that are named for the type of cells that form them, such as ovarian, breast, pancreas and lung.
Renal cell carcinoma forms in the kidney. It is the most common type of kidney cancer in adults, representing approximately 90 percent of cases. The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be approximately 61,000 new cases of kidney cancer in the United States during 2011, and that about 13,000 people will die from the disease.
Pancreatic cancer is a fast-growing and difficult to detect form of cancer that affects the pancreas. According to the American Cancer Society, the annual incidence of pancreatic cancer is estimated to be greater than 44,000 cases, and more than 37,000 people are expected to die from the disease in 2011.
Prostate cancer forms in tissues of the prostate, a gland in the male reproductive system. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 240,800 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in the United States during 2011, making it the most commonly diagnosed form of cancer.
