Information for Patients and Physicians

Multiple myeloma is a cancer of plasma cells, a type of white blood cell found primarily in the bone marrow. In multiple myeloma, malignant plasma cells grow continuously, destroying normal bone tissue and crowding out normal blood cell production. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 20,000 new cases of multiple myeloma will be diagnosed in the United States during 2009.
