About Cancer Therapies

Cancer is the second leading cause of death for people in the United States, resulting in over 565,000 deaths annually. Current cancer treatments include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, hormones and immunotherapy. Therapies for advanced stage or metastatic cancer continue to fall short of extending survival for the majority of patients. While response rates of 50% or more can be seen with newer anti-cancer agents, time to disease progression and overall survival have not been dramatically improved in most cases. Consequently, continued effort to develop new treatments and combinations is needed to improve the disease-free and overall survival for cancer patients.

In the last decade, a number of new agents with promising antitumor activity have been developed. These include monoclonal antibodies, a class of biologic agent, which can target tumors and potentially limit the toxicity to normal tissues associated with traditional chemotherapy.
